Many aspiring writers set their sights on publishing their first book, short story or even a magazine article. And while it is great to have goals, in fact, necessary to have them, it can also keep them from exploring other options that may come along in the meantime. For instance, they may scoff at creative writing contests and think they are nothing more than a waste of time. However, all writers should be looking at writing contests as a great way not only to make a few bucks or gain the use of a valuable service but also as a way to stay in sharp form.

Other prize options though can be far more valuable. One famed writing contest allows you to have your work read ad reviewed by an editor with the possibility of getting a publishing contract. With these types of wins, you will get honest feedback that can allow you to strengthen your overall writing skills and can show you where some of your main issues are.

Remember, while entering writing contests is always a good idea, there are many that require an entry fee- if you are on a tight budget, choose the ones that require an entry fee carefully and use some of the free ones to practice your skills and increase your luck.
