Convention one-liners driving most discussion of issues on Twitter

Typically, it's considered good news to lead an important race. In Missouri, it's a cause for anger and wild accusations. Rep. Todd Akin's explosive comments about rape and pregnancy have thrown a bizarre wrench in the Senate race, as partisans on both sides of the aisle claim that pollsters are artificially underestimating the other side's standing -- on purpose. Democratic-leaning pollster Public Policy Polling (PPP) went into the field Monday night -- roughly 24 hours after Akin's initial comments set off a firestorm. ...

Fitness in middle age reduces risk of developing chronic diseases

According to a new study, physical fitness in middle age significantly reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases in later life. Researchers affiliated from the Cooper Institute at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas published their findings online on August 27 in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The researchers noted that the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and mortality has been well documented in the medical literature; however, the association between midlife fitness and the development of nonfatal chronic conditions in older age has not been studied.

Therefore, they designed as study to examine the association between midlife fitness and chronic disease outcomes in later life. Data from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study were linked with Medicare claims. They reviewed 18,670 healthy individuals (21.1%: women; average age: 49 years) who survived to receive Medicare coverage from January 1, 1999 through December 31, 2009. Fitness estimated by Balke treadmill time was analyzed as a continuous variable (in metabolic equivalents (METs)) and according to age- and gender-specific factors. The investigators defined eight common chronic conditions; associations between these chronic conditions and midlife fitness were assessed. The conditions were adjusted for age, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, glucose levels, alcohol use, and smoking.

The researchers found that after 120,780 person-years of Medicare exposure with a median follow-up of 26 years, the highest quintile of fitness (quintile 5) was associated with a lower incidence of chronic conditions compared with the lowest quintile (quintile 1) in men (15.6 vs. 28.2 per 100 person-years) and women (11.4 vs. 20.1 per 100 person-years). A higher fitness (in METs) was associated with a lower risk of developing chronic conditions in both men and women. Among individuals who expired (2,406; 12.9%), higher fitness was associated with a lower risk of developing chronic conditions relative to survival.

The researchers concluded that in this group of healthy middle-aged adults, fitness was significantly associated with a lower risk of developing chronic disease outcomes during 26 years of follow-up. The investigators noted that their findings indicate that a higher level of midlife fitness was associated with a delay in the development of chronic conditions; therefore, morbidity is delayed until nearer the end of life in fitter individuals.

In a related editorial, Diane E. Bild, MD, MPH, from the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland, noted that the study provides ?further evidence for physical fitness as a contributor to healthy aging and the compression of morbidity.? She added that in addition to this observational study, the ongoing Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders trial will compare a moderate-intensity physical activity program with a successful aging health education program in 1,600 sedentary older persons who will be monitored for an average of 2.7 years.

(AP) ? The Korean Peninsula cleaned up Wednesday after one powerful typhoon and girded itself for another that could be particularly damaging to North Korea, which is still recovering from earlier floods.

The first storm, Typhoon Bolaven, left at least 12 people dead in South Korea, including eight fishermen killed in wrecks off the southern coast. Damage in North Korea, which was hit late Tuesday and early Wednesday, wasn't completely clear, though state media reported that the storm knocked out power, submerged roads and houses, and ruined farm land.

Typhoon Tembin, meanwhile, was expected to reach South Korea on Thursday, with its outer bands hitting North Korea later in the day.

Tembin is expected to weaken as it reaches North Korea. Heavy rain, however, often means catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure. The North's official Korean Central News Agency said some areas of Hwanghae and Kangwon provinces would receive up to 70 millimeters (2.8 inches) of rain on Thursday and Friday.

Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts in other parts of Asia weren't as powerful as predicted.

KCNA reported that Bolaven tore off a power station's roof, cut power lines in Kaesong city and damaged more than 8,500 hectares (21,000 acres) of maize fields, hurting the chances of a successful harvest.

The typhoon tore roofs off several public buildings in South Hwanghae province and damaged TV relay facilities in North Hwanghae province, KCNA said.

Many houses and roads were submerged or destroyed and railroads were covered by landslides in South Phyongan, Kangwon and South Hamgyong provinces, KCNA said.

Strong winds and rain lashed Pyongyang, the North's capital, Tuesday, but there was little apparent damage there.

Thousands of young people had been brought to Pyongyang to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the country's main youth political organization. The young delegates toured various places in Pyongyang on Tuesday, state media said, and leader Kim Jong Un visited a military unit on the country's eastern border with the South, despite torrential rain.

In South Korea, Bolaven temporarily left hundreds of thousands without power, canceled flights, left nearly 100 families homeless and damaged farm land. The storm also churned up rough seas that smashed two Chinese fishing ships into rocks off southern Jeju island, killing eight and leaving seven missing. Coast guard ships were still searching for the missing fishermen after an eighth dead body washed ashore Wednesday afternoon, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

The coast guard rescued 12 fishermen from the ships on Tuesday, and six others swam or were washed ashore.

The storm killed at least four other people across South Korea, officials said.

The storms come as North Korea tries to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks.

Google Now update brings sports, movies, storm warnings

4 hrs.

If you're lucky enough to have a phone running the latest version of Android, an update to Google Now is rolling out Wednesday?that lets you check movie times, receive?emergency alerts?and get the latest scores from the ballgame.

The Google Now service gives personalized capsule responses to common queries about current and local events. The feature was announced in June, but there are still new "cards" (as the special search results are called) being developed.

The latest update brings some extremely practical new cards to Android 4.1 users. One card brings up local movie showtimes, which is probably what you're looking for if you search for a theater or film on your phone. Another (just in time for Isaac) allows emergency messages like storm warnings and earthquake alerts to be pushed to your phone.

And to the delight of many sports fans, another card lets you keep up to date with any of 140 soccer, football, hockey and baseball teams. You can select your favorites from a list or search for them, and can then choose to receive news?before, during?or after games (or all three).

If you're running Android 4.1, you can download the improved?app via the Google?Play Store, or very possibly your phone has already detected that the update is ready and will download it automatically.

China defense chief plans rare India trip, to discuss border

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - China's defense minister is due to visit India next week to seek deeper military ties, in a rare trip seen as a sign Beijing wants to stabilize its heavily fortified Himalayan border as it deals with growing friction in the South China Sea.

General Liang Guanglie will be the first Chinese defense minister to visit neighboring India in six years, a period that has seen a buildup of infrastructure and weapons in disputed regions on both sides of the border.

Guanglie will arrive in New Delhi on September 2 and leave on September 6, the Indian government said in a statement. Measures to increase "peace and tranquility" along the border are on the agenda.

"The two sides will also discuss measures to promote defense cooperation between their armed forces," the Indian government said.

India and China fought a brief war in 1962 over the Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh regions, parts of which both countries claim. Trade between them is soaring but they compete for resources and influence in Asia.

China is also suspicious that India's blossoming ties with the United States are part of a strategy to contain China's rise on the world stage.

Despite numerous rounds of talks in recent years, the nuclear-armed giants still disagree about large stretches of the border and are spending billions of dollars on beefing up defenses in disputed areas, as well as extending road and rail links.

Zhang Li, a professor of South Asian studies at China's Sichuan University, said the visit signaled a desire for stability on the Indian border at a time when China is facing rising tension off its coasts.

"China and India have not made any progress at all in talks about their territorial dispute. China hopes to have a stable relationship with India, including having military exchanges.

"The visit is also about the situation on its other borders, the maritime disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea," Zhang said.

Noonan insists no decision has been made over property tax ...

Michael Noonan

Finance Minister Michael Noonan has re-iterated his Cabinet colleague Leo Varadkar?s statement that the government has made no decision over how the forthcoming property tax would be implemented.

His statement comes after weekend speculation that the tax would be based on the value of a home rather than on a site value tax basis.

Speaking this morning, however, Minister Noonan said that he had a preferred method that he would share with the Cabinet.

He said the only thing that is now certain is that there will be a tax and it will be collected through the Revenue Commissioners.

Sinn F?in spokesperson Pearse Doherty has said that his party opposes a property tax. He said that Sinn F?in favours the introduction of a wealth tax instead.

The Donegal man claimed that ?800m would be raised by the introduction of this tax.

Mr Doherty said that the Troika made it clear to his party that aspects of the bailout could be renegotiated as long as revenue targets were met.

(AP) ? Stock futures were essentially flat with very little trading Tuesday as markets await any hint about the status of the economy from the Fed's annual meeting this week in Jackson Hole.

Monday was among the lightest trading days of the year and it appears that may be the trend for most of the week.

Dow Jones industrial futures slipped 9 points to 13,098. The broader S&P futures gave up 1.7 points to hit 1,406.60 and the Nasdaq futures fell 1.75 points to 2,781.

There are no major earnings reports or government economic data being released, leaving investors to speculate what U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke might say during a much anticipated speech on Friday.

Few expect Bernanke to make any significant announcements, but his speech will still be thoroughly sifted for implied meaning.

Energy markets paid very close attention to the movements of tropical storm Isaac Tuesday as it appeared to be blooming into a hurricane.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami predicted Isaac would power up to hurricane strength, which starts at winds of 74 mph, later in the day and be at least a Category 1 hurricane by the time it's expected to reach the swampy coast of southeast Louisiana.

The price of benchmark crude rose above $96 a barrel.

About one-quarter of the nation's oil is produced in the Gulf of Mexico. As of Monday afternoon, about 80 percent of Gulf oil production had been suspended, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. Companies have evacuated 346 oil and gas production platforms and 41 drilling rigs.

Also on Tuesday, The Conference Board, a private research group, will release its monthly consumer confidence index at 10 a.m. Eastern. Economists expect that the August reading will show the feeling of U.S. consumers about the economy is largely unchanged from July.

Juventus overcomes off-pitch issues to beat Parma

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:43 p.m. ET Aug. 25, 2012

MILAN (AP) -Juventus showed it has not been affected by off-the-pitch issues as it beat Parma 2-0 in its Serie A opener on Saturday.

Stephan Lichtsteiner scored nine minutes into the second half and Andrea Pirlo doubled his team's tally four minutes later to get Juve's title defense off to a winning start.

Assistant coach Massimo Carrera was standing in for coach Antonio Conte, who was banned for 10 months for failing to report match-fixing during the 2010-11 season, when he was coach of then-Serie B team Siena.

In the earlier game, a last-minute strike from Stevan Jovetic saw Fiorentina come from behind to snatch a 2-1 win against Udinese.

Juventus had a poor first half, capped off by missing a penalty in the 34th minute after Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante brought down Lichtsteiner.

It was a somewhat harsh penalty as replays showed Lichtsteiner had been offside.

Mirante redeemed himself by saving Arturo Vidal's poor spot kick.

Juve looked a changed side after the break and took the lead when Lichtsteiner tucked in Kwadwo Asamoah's low cross from close range.

The Serie A champion doubled its lead when Mirante appeared to have saved Pirlo's free kick on the line but the referee ruled that the ball had gone in.

Juve then had goalkeeper Marco Storari to thank for not allowing Parma back into the game.

The only dark spot for the champions was the sight of new signing Sebastian Giovinco stretchered off shortly before full time.

Elsewhere, a Jovetic brace helped Fiorentina beat Udinese.

Maicosuel scored in his first league game for Udinese to give it the lead but Jovetic leveled midway through the second period and snatched the winner in stoppage time.

Host Fiorentina was in complete control in the second half and Udinese clearly missed Kwadwo Asamoah, Mauricio Isla and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who were all sold in the offseason.

Udinese also had one eye on the return leg of its Champions League playoff against Braga. Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin opted to rest star striker and captain Antonio Di Natale.

Fiorentina struggled to break a resolute Udinese defence. Its best chance came in the 26th minute when Romulo's fierce right-footed shot was deflected just past the post by Udinese defender Danilo.

Udinese took the lead moments later. Maicosuel slipped but managed to collect Luis Muriel's through ball and fired past the advancing Fiorentina goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

Fiorentina almost leveled six minutes after the break when Zeljko Brkic dropped the ball and Jovetic was inches away from taking advantage of the Udinese goalkeeper's mistake. Shortly afterward Brkic pulled off a brilliant fingertip save to keep out Adem Ljajic's right-footed effort.

Fiorentina was back on level terms in the 68th when Jovetic collected Borja Valero's cross and swiveled before unleashing a shot that was deflected in by Danilo.

The home side upped the pressure and Udinese found itself trapped in its own half.

Fiorentina's hard work paid off in the third minute of stoppage time, when Jovetic beat the offside trap and slotted past Brkic.

In battered Aleppo, rebels dig in for war of attrition

Syrian rebels say they are digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, where what was being billed as the "mother of all battles" is now dragging on into a second month of bloody stalemate.

Aleppo is bearing the brunt of attacks by government warplanes, tanks and heavy artillery as the army battles to dislodge rebels who claim to control 60 percent of the battered northern metropolis.

"We don't have enough weapons, they (the Syrian army) don't have enough men," said Abu Haidar, a rebel fighter in Saif al-Dawla, a district in the city's southwestern belt where much of the fighting is concentrated.

At least 200,000 people have fled the city since late July when the increasingly bloody conflict spread to Aleppo, a once thriving manufacturing and commercial hub where war has now left a trail of destruction, with bombed out buildings and shuttered shops.

"It is a long war. Each party wants to settle the score, but it is a war of attrition that will drag on, with bombardments and fighting every day," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a watchdog that has a network of sources on the ground.

Some rebel commanders say they are aware that even if the Free Syrian Army -- a motley collection of armed opposition groups -- seizes full control on the ground, they will remained besieged from the air by the military's far superior firepower.

"Bashar al-Assad is like a wounded animal now, so I don't expect him and his army to follow a logic," Abu Mohamed, who leads a small katiba (brigade) near the Citadel in old Aleppo, said of the embattled Syrian president..

"I sometimes think he wants us to take the ground and then surround the city and starve us. He can then wait, try to cut us off and hope that we make mistakes, that civilians turn against us," he told AFP.

Abu Mohammed defected from the army three years ago and found political asylum in Belgium before crossing back into Syria via Turkey more than a year ago when the revolution started.

A top FSA commander in Aleppo, Abdel Jabba al-Okaidi, told AFP on Tuesday that the rebels now controlled more than 60 percent of the city, but this was rejected as "completely false" by a security source in Damascus.

And on Thursday, the army said it had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods in the heart of the predominantly Sunni Muslim city, whose fate is seen as crucial to the outcome of the war, in part because of its strategic location near Turkey.

The Damascus security source said rebel ranks were swelling in terms of men but that the opposition fighters were lacking in arms as government air strikes had destroyed many weapons caches.

"The army is trying to create security zones," the source said, by carving up neighbourhoods using troops and tanks to control the main streets and then "cleansing" each area of rebels.

"It's a long process," he said.

Amnesty International said this week that civilians were facing "horrific" violence in Aleppo and indiscriminate attacks by regime troops, reporting scores of civilians killed or wounded in their homes or while queuing for bread.

Assad's men now control the Citadel, an ancient fortress in the heart of the Old City, but rebel fighters are surrounding the area and often take pot-shots at the troops.

Not far away, in the Qastal Harami alleyways of the Old City, the Katiba Khuttab brigade of fighters were manning a sniper post set up behind a stack of sandbags just outside a bookshop.

The brigade commander, Khuttab, paced over cobblestones that have been covered with stickers featuring Assad's face, so his fighters can trample on their enemy.

"The people in this area have mostly left, they are poor, so they don't provide us with help as such, in fact we try to give those who are left behind help. But they all support us," he told AFP.

Some rebels said the reason Assad's forces do not launch a wider ground assault to reconquer Aleppo and use their greater firepower to break the back of the rebellion could be linked to its military failure in the town of Aazaz, which lies north of Aleppo near the Turkish border.

Government forces stormed Aazaz in February but the FSA seized control at the end of July after five months of fierce fighting.

"Assad's army had prepared a large ground offensive but when the time came to fight, the soldiers were divided and fought among themselves," said Abdullah, a rebel who defected from the army a year ago.

"Assad now knows he cannot trust his own men, if he wants to send troops into the field. Aazaz was on a relatively small scale, but if he deploys 20,000 men for an assault on Aleppo and the same kind of thing happens, imagine the consequences.

"It would be the end of his credibility, the entire army would defect, the regime would collapse.

"Assad cannot afford that risk, so he's happy to use just tanks, Iranian snipers and jets flown by Russian pilots," Abdullah charged.

Tough Toddler | Love Home Grow Garden

One of the things that my toddler likes to do these days is wrestling with his little brother. I don?t like it when he do that but the little brother seem to take it easy. I told him not to hit him in the head as that will make his little brother get hurt. But sometimes, those?head gear?will come in handy to protect them both from getting bruises in their head. People these days are sensitive to what your kids look like and if they find out they have bruises they think you are abusing your kid. I don?t want that to happen. Sometimes, boys will be boys too and they exhibit themselves to doing this things without your presence. I have two tough toddler in the house to tame. How about you, do your boys act the same way too?

5 Steps to Providing High Quality & Safe Infant/Toddler Care | The ...

As I prepared the Module 6 and Week 28 eCourse Lesson for the member of the Family Home Child Care Empowerment Club, I was inspired to share some of the tips with you!

The topic of week 28 eCourse Lesson was: How to provide a healthy & Safe environment for infant/toddlers. The tips were provided in the form of a health & safety checklist, because I believe that the best way to improve your childcare program is through self assessment.

Today I am going to share 5 steps to Providing High Quality & Safe Infant/Toddler Care:

1. Maintain Ratio. Be sure that there is no more than? four infant/toddlers to a care giver. It can be quite demanding for one caregiver to care for too many infant/toddlers. Moreover, infant/toddlers need lots of loving care and it is almost impossible for one caregiver to meet the needs of more than? four infant/toddlers at any given time. ** In some cases, it is recommended that the ratios are 1-t0-3.

2. Be Alert of the Health/Safety Needs of the Children. For example: It is important that you or your staff know who feels well and who does not. Are the children adequately supervised? Know where the adventurous toddlers are, at all times, etc. Being aware of the health & safety needs of the children is a vital part of providing quality infant/toddler care.

3. Smoke Free Home or Center. You can almost assume that caregivers will be considerate and not smoke around children, however, it is very important that parents know that you have a smoke free facility!

I suggest that you post a SMOKE FREE ZONE sign. Cigarette smoke is very toxic to a child. Moreover, if you have smokers on staff, it is also a good idea to require that they wash their hands after smoking. Furthermore, if? your staff member(s) smell like smoke after a break; require that they change their clothes, before handling the infants/toddlers.

Home Providers: Require that family members smoke outdoors during the hours of childcare.

4. Post the number to Poison Control. You may have already removed all medications and cleaning supplies out of the reach of the children. However, what if a parent fails to tell you that there is medication in a diaper bag and a toddler gets a hold of it?? That?s right?you will need to call Poison control right away!

So be sure to post your local poison control number near your phone. Here is the national number to poison control: 1-800-222-1222. ***Moreover, check diaper bags daily for medication, etc.

5. Small Toys Can Be a Choking Hazard!! If a small toy can fit through the opening of a toilet tissue tube, than it is a choking hazard for an infant/toddler. Be sure that toys that are 1? 1/2 inches in diameter are kept out of the reach of young children (preferably under the age of 3).

Infant/toddler learn about their world by putting things in their mouth and this is why you must be mindful of the toys that are within the reach of infant/toddlers.

In summary, I hope that you have found this blog post to be helpful to you. Most importantly, My hope is that you create a High Quality and Safe place for infant/toddlers.

Life as a Communication Strategist ? wurcomblog

Posted: August 25, 2012 in Ingrid Flink

A new intern came to accompany my supervisor and I, her name is Estefy and she is Ecuadorian but lives in the States for some time. Back in the States, she works for ?Real Food Challenge?, a campaign working on increasing food procurement at universities and schools. I?m really excited to share my experiences and hope to learn from hers too! After an introductory meeting we decided to split the communication team into internal and external communication.

I would focus on the internal communication which entails maintaining contact with the commission members, accompanying the local regions, systematization of activities. The external communication on the other hand manages all the contact with the outside world through the blog, bulletin, social media and work with the press. So this keeps us busy momentarily but I have realized it is very easy to take over the tasks of external communication.

We have now set up a clear presentation about the campaign and its internal and external communication strategy. It is very important because at big or small events we are able to give a clear impression of the campaign and it is extremely helpful to figure out the process towards the big event in Guayaquil. So at this point I am in the process of finalizing the document which consists of the internal communication strategy. In order to do this I have used two interviews with Roberto Gortaire (the president) and Eliana Estrella (responsible for the communication) and my own observations in my internship process. There are various points which makes this communication strategy different than most internal communication strategies.

For one, it is not for an organization but for a campaign. Therefore we cannot include any mission and vision statements. Furthermore, almost all participants in the commission are joining on a voluntary basis. This makes for a very different approach in interactions as for example the meetings are seen as a positive space for interactions; to meet people of similar interests and motivations. This type of organization can very much be seen as a form of ?self-organization?; people with shared identity, in this case their passion for sustainable and healthy food consumption are driven not by external controls but on their own motivations and possibly interests of their organizations of course (this we should not forget). Another point is that the relationships with the localities for example are based on personal/friend relationships rather than institutional ones.

In the document we have clearly tried to mention these points as it is very important for the next person in charge of the communication of the campaign to be aware of these aspects. In the last part of the document, recommendations are given for the internal communication strategy. For example, the future of our relationship with the key actors in the provinces is a very important one. A suggestion would be to have a national workshop so that all actors can think about the objectives of the campaign, the role they play in the campaign, the campaign activities in their province, and the future of the campaign. I feel this could be part of a very interesting internship assignment; organizing and facilitating such a workshop so if anyone would be interested, please contact me or send an email (in Spanish) to consumocuidadoecuador@gmail.com! Also as for the sustainability of the communication aspect, it is important that a guide is made for organizing events so that events can be replicated in various provinces. In addition, the evaluation of the internal communication is of significance. All members in the commission should receive a survey in which they review the objectives, tools, activities and future of the campaign. This is very useful for the process and acknowledging that everyone is on the same line.

Well folks, this will be my last blog until I leave this food paradise! I hoped you enjoyed reading and inspired you to somehow get involved in the global food movement too..

Gambia to execute every prisoner on death row

Simon Maina/AFP-Getty Images

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh arrives at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 15.

By Ian Johnston, NBC News

A plan by Gambia to execute every prisoner on death row next month has been condemned by the African Union and civil rights groups.

According to the Civil Society Associations Gambia, there are currently 47 people awaiting death sentences in the West African nation, including 11 political prisoners and eight suspected of having severe mental health problems. One has been on death row for more than 25 years.

?CSAG is strongly convinced that most of those who were convicted to death for treason went through unfair trials and considers their convictions politically related,? the group said in a statement.

?Given that the Gambia Government uses the death penalty and other harsh sentences as a tool to silence political dissent and opposition, CSAG believes that any execution is a further indicator of the brutality with which President [Yahya] Jammeh?s regime is bent on crushing political dissent,? it added.

Benin's President Thomas Boni Yayi, chairman of the African Union, urged Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup, not to go ahead with the executions, according to BBC News.

"After having learned of the imminent execution of a number of prisoners sentenced to death, President Yayi, who is very concerned, wished that President Yahya Jammeh not carry out such a decision," Beninois Foreign Minister Nassirou Bako Arifari told BBC Afrique.

Jammeh, in an address to the nation Monday, Jammeh said that the executions would be carried out within the next few weeks.

"By the middle of next month, all the death sentences would have been carried out to the letter; there is no way my government will allow 99 percent of the population to be held to ransom by criminals," he said, according to news service AFP.

President's 'repressive nature'
AFP said that eight military top brass, including the ex-deputy head of the police force, were given death sentences for treason last year. The last execution in the country happened five years ago.

CSAG said his remarks, which were made to mark the Muslim festival of Eid, a time when ?Muslims the world over seek forgiveness, extend messages of peace and love, show solidarity with one another and those in distressing conditions.?

?President Jammeh chose once again to show his brutality and repressive nature by informing Muslim leaders that he would execute prisoners,? the group said in the statement.

It added that the death row inmates included 39 Gambians with three from neighboring Senegal, two from Mali, two from Nigeria and one from Guinea Bissau. There are 46 men and one woman.

CSAG called for the international community to put pressure on Jammeh to stop the executions.

Death sentences were "known to be used as a tool against the political opposition" in Gambia, international rights group Amnesty International said in a report.?

"Furthermore, international standards on fair trials, including presumption of innocence, access to lawyers and exclusion of any evidence obtained as a result of torture, are often not respected,? it added.

Advice That Will Help You When Deciding On Bankruptcy | Siben ...

TIP! It is wise to reconsider filing for divorce if your financial situation is grim. Many people who divorce must immediately file bankruptcy because of unforeseen financial difficulties.

There are quite a number of people who have been affected by the economy, and now find themselves buried in debt. The bills keep adding up and it is never a friendly voice on the other line when the phone rings. If this is your story, then personal bankruptcy may be for you. Keep reading to see if this is a viable solution for you.

TIP! Be aware of recent changes, if any, in the bankruptcy code. Bankruptcy laws change a lot and before making the decision to file, you need to know what you are getting yourself into.

Document your questions and concerns prior to sitting down with a bankruptcy attorney. Every second you spend with the lawyer will cost you money. You can save yourself a lot of aggravation and money if you come up with a list of concerns and have questions ready to ask before speaking with the attorney. Do not leave until you know you have a grasp on the situation.

TIP! Choose the best bankruptcy attorney in your area. Once you have narrowed down your choices to one, call and ask if they offer a free consultation.

Make sure you monitor the activities of your lawyer while your bankruptcy case is pending. You should be aware of what is going on and not be afraid to pick-up the phone and ask. Mistakes can unintentionally occur in busy law firms, which is why it is important to keep on top of things yourself, just in case. You may not believe it; however, lawyers are actually human.

TIP! Bankruptcy should not be filed by anyone who makes more than their bills cost. Though bankruptcy may appear to be a good way to escape your debts, it does affect your credit negatively for a fairly long time.

Before you commit to a bankruptcy filing, make sure that your most troublesome debts can actually be discharged through bankruptcy. Debt like student loans will stay on your credit report whether or not you file. For debts of that nature, it may make sense to seek loan consolidation assistance.

TIP! If you can, get a word-of-mouth referral for a lawyer. There are plenty of companies who know how to take advantage of people who seem desperate, and it?s important to be sure your bankruptcy can go smoothly; take your time and choose someone you can trust.

Do not hesitate to remind your lawyer of any details regarding your case. It is wrong to assume that your lawyer will remember every word you ever utter! Ultimately, this is your bankruptcy and your financial future, so never hesitate to advocate on your behalf.

TIP! Don?t forget to enjoy your life once your finances get fixed. Many debtors stress-out during the time of filing.

There is no requirement to dispose of every debt you have when you file for bankruptcy. There is a type of bankruptcy, referred to as Chapter 13, that enables you to enter into an agreement to repay a part of your debt to each of your creditors. Most people think paying off their debts is a moral obligation, so avoid filing bankruptcy. Chapter 13 is a good alternative, as it helps credits recover some of their money while letting you escape from your crushing debt load.

TIP! Don?t drag your feet figuring out if bankruptcy is the right thing to do. It can be hard to ask for help but it?s not recommended for you to get further into debt.

Weigh all of your options before declaring bankruptcy. For example, consumer credit counseling programs can help if your debt isn?t too large. You can also talk to creditors and ask them to lower payments, but be sure to get any debt agreements in writing.

TIP! If you plan to file bankruptcy, do not continue using credit cards. You may be tempted to make expenditures, but doing so will be frowned upon by the court.

Do not consider paying off tax debt with credit cards and filing for bankruptcy afterward. It won?t work. Generally, this type of debt is not covered by bankruptcy filing, and you will still have a large debt owing to the IRS. The rule here is that if you can get the tax discharged then you can get the debt discharged. If you live in an area where tax can be discharged through bankruptcy, financing your tax bill is pretty pointless.

TIP! If there is an error and your bankruptcy claim is closed, it is possible to file again. However, be aware that the normal stay after a dismissal is 30 days after filing.

One of the best ways to learn more about the bankruptcy process is to hit the Internet and look up reputable bankruptcy websites. The United States Some valuable resources include the U.S. Dept of Justice and American Bankruptcy Institute. You need to spend some time gathering valuable information so you can file your bankruptcy with confidence.

TIP! Quickly decide to start being more fiscally responsible prior to filing. The period before your filing is not the time to run up additional debts.

As you now know, there is help out there for you if you want to file for bankruptcy. Don?t let the situation overwhelm you. Look at bankruptcy as a way to begin again

Spotify accounts tip Canada launch, possibly expanding to Asia and South America

It's the question we get asked every time we post about Spotify -- when is the music streaming service coming to Canada? There was little doubt the company was looking at our neighbors to the north, it always just seemed like a matter of when. No firm dates here, but accounts published by Spotify that have been obtained by The Wall Street Journal seem to confirm those intentions, adding that it's also looking to expand its footprint into "countries in Asia and South America." The service is currently available in 15 countries.

Prince William on Prince Harry Naked Photos: Not Impressed, Report Indicates

Prince Harry is in the royal doghouse after naked photos of him partying leaked online, and no one is less pleased than his big brother Prince William.

If you missed them, pictures of Prince Harry naked and playing strip billiards with some girls in Vegas hit the web last night ... to his family's chagrin.

"William was told about the photos this morning," a royal insider said of Kate Middleton's husband and the heir to the throne. "He's not impressed."

Take it Down a NotchPrince William of Wales

What happened in Vegas definitely didn't stay there for Harry.

No word on how other members of the royal family - namely his father Prince Charles or grandmother Queen Elizabeth II - have reacted to the scandal.

Professionally as well as personally, Prince Harry, a military helicopter pilot on leave during the wild Sin City weekend, has some explaining to do.

"He will be reprimanded [by the army]. Officers should never bring the Service into disrepute, whether on or off duty," a senior military source says.

"This display of social misbehavior has raised eyebrows."

Harry, who spent much of last fall in Arizona and California during an intensive training period, "likely won't be dismissed" from the army, however.

"This type of behavior is not expected of someone his age and rank. They will call him in when he gets back and want to talk to him about it."

While he certainly didn't make his family proud and probably should know better, Harry also should be given some slack here, don't you think?

There's no indication he did anything illegal or even salacious, nor did he ever plan on some shady person selling pics of him, we're guessing.
