As the nonstop developments in the Aaron Hernandez murder case(s) begin to subside, it?s time to broaden the lens and address a topic that has popped up from time to time over the past two weeks.

Should the Patriots have avoided drafting Hernandez in 2010 and/or giving him a long-term, big-money contract in 2012?

Many are suggesting that the Pats screwed the proverbial pooch on this one, that they negligently brought a potential murderer to Massachusetts and, two years later, made him a multi-multi-millionaire.? But there are multi-problems with that logic.

For starters, there really was no indication that Hernandez was anything other than a kid who:? (1) liked to smoke marijuana; and (2) periodically made mischief.? As the folks at CFT pointed out on Saturday, Hernandez was indeed questioned in connection with a shooting nearly six years ago in Gainesville.? But it was perfunctory and brief.? Other Gators were questioned at the time, including safety Reggie Nelson and the Pouncey twins.

The only true red flag that attached to Hernandez from his college days came from an affinity for inhaling the fumes of a plant that, if anything, make the user less likely to commit violence or do anything other than sit around and eat Fritos.? And if there?s a link between smoking pot and murder, there would be a lot more murders.

Whatever was wrong with Hernandez, he supposedly had been rehabilitated by former Florida coach Urban Meyer, who according to the New York Times personally conducted ?daily Bible sessions? with Hernandez in order to turn him around.? Meyer presumably vouched for Hernandez to Patriots coach Bill Belichick.? Given the strong friendship between Belichick and Meyer that likely went a long way to persuading Belichick that Hernandez?s talents justified the risk.

Of course, some are now painting the picture that Hernandez entered the NFL with a pair of six-guns strapped to his side and ink on his arms that not-so-cryptically spelled out plans for his future crime sprees.? But where we these ?sources? with knowledge of supposed gang ties and other actual or perceived misdeeds or antisocial tendencies when Hernandez emerged as a fourth-round star in his second NFL season?

That would have been the obvious time for scouts, General Managers, and coaches to cover their collective asses by leaking the notion that, even though Hernandez was playing at a very high level, they avoided Hernandez in rounds one through three because he had more problems than marijuana.? But there was nothing ? not until after Hernandez was tied to a murder case and scouts and sources and some in the media all began to join in a hands-across-Whoville chorus of I told you so.

Even if Hernandez?s antics had generated real warning signs beyond marijuana, it?s impossible to connect dots from off-field misbehavior to premeditated murder.? It?s far more reasonable (or, as the case may be, far less reckless) to connect a substance-abuse problem (drugs or alcohol) to the potential for accidental death or dismemberment while driving a car.

Murderers come from all walks of life, with no way to prospectively screen for them ? unless they?ve actually killed in the past.? For every Aaron Hernandez there?s a Jovan Belcher, who generated no objective evidence to suggest that he would get into serious trouble before he repeatedly shot the mother of his young child and then killed himself in the presence of his coach and G.M.? Ditto for Rae Carruth, who orchestrated the murder of the mother of his unborn son because Carruth apparently didn?t want to pay child support.? The Chiefs and the Panthers saw neither problem coming, because there?s rarely any reason to suspect someone of having the capacity to deliberately kill someone else, regardless of the person?s history.

For the best proof of this, look no farther than O.J. Simpson.? Revered as a player, beloved as a broadcaster, and celebrated as an actor, he would have been the last man anyone would have regarded as the potential murderer of his ex-wife and a stranger who was in the worst possible place at the worst possible time.? (Simpson was acquitted in criminal court, but found legally responsible in civil court for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.)

On one hand, this is an extreme example of how the Modified Patriot Way of buying low ? via trades, free agency, and the draft ? can go very wrong.? On the other hand, the only way to avoid blame for harboring a potential murderer is to shun any player who has generated at any time any reason to believe that he could do anything wrong as an NFL player.

Even then, there?s still a chance that a player with no red flags will be the next Jovan Belcher, Rae Carruth, or O.J. Simpson.

Michael Townley, un norteamericano asesino que fue prestado a la CIA por la DINA - la Gestapo del dictador chileno Augusto Pinochet - y Guillermo Novo Sampol, un viejo c?mplice cubanoamericano del agente CIA Luis Posada Carriles, reciben una protecci?n integral a la vez del FBI, con el cual siempre colaboraron, de la CIA que sirvieron de ejecutantes de tareas sucias, y del Departamento de Estado que pretende ignorar su presencia en territorio norteamericano.

Cejas y Gala?ena fueron secuestrados el 9 de agosto de 1976 en el barrio porte?o de Belgrano.

INTRODUCIDOS EN TANQUES Y LANZADOS AL CANAL

Jos? Luis Mend?z Mend?z, eminente historiador e investigador cubano ha observado desde a?os la b?squeda de los restos de quienes son considerados m?rtires por la Revoluci?n cubana.

Desde Buenos Aires, donde se encuentra, nos cuenta: ?Desde el 2004 segu?amos una pista de que los compa?eros hab?an sido introducidos en tanques de 55 galones y tirados en el canal de San Fernando en la provincia de Buenos Aires?.

?Se sab?a que era un m?todo que utilizaban los represores del centro clandestino de la Operaci?n C?ndor, llamado Automotores Orletti, para desaparecer sus v?ctimas.?

Y fue precisamente en un predio frente al aeropuerto de San Fernando donde la investigaci?n de M?ndez apuntaba como la pista certera, que aparecieron los restos de estas dos v?ctimas de la complicidad del Plan Condor y de la CIA norteamericana.

En su minucioso y arduo trabajo, M?ndez fue hasta entrevistar a Manuel Contreras Sep?lveda, quien fuera jefe de la Direcci?n de Informaci?n Nacional de Chile (DINA), el 19 de julio de 2004.

?Contreras me revel? que viajaron a Argentina, el 11 de agosto de 1976, su agente el norteamericano Michael Townley y el terrorista internacional refugiado en Miami Guillermo Novo Sampol para interrogar y torturar a los diplom?ticos cubanos? Jes?s Cejas Arias y Crescencio Gala?ena Hern?ndez.

?Novo Sampol y Townley como Luis Posada Carriles est?n impunes de decenas de cr?menes gracias a la complicidad de administraciones sucesivas en Estados Unidos por m?s de medio siglo?, subraya el historiador, autor de varios libros sobre el terrorismo contra Cuba..

El 12 de junio de 2012 fueron encontrados los restos de Gala?ena y el 18 de abril de este a?o los de Cejas, apenas 50 metros de distancia entre uno y otro.

Junto a Gala?ena Hern?ndez se encontraron los cad?veres de los argentinos Mar?a Rosa Clementi de Cancere, empleada de la Embajada de Cuba, y Ricardo Manuel Gonz?lez, tambi?n secuestrados durante el mes de agosto de 1976 y hasta ese momento desaparecidos.

Los trabajos se han realizado en el marco de la ?megacausa? que juzga los delitos de lesa humanidad cometidos en la ?rbita del Primer Cuerpo de Ej?rcito argentino, reabierta tras la derogaci?n y declaraci?n de ?nulidad insalvable? de las leyes de Obediencia Debida y Punto Final.

Entre otros cr?menes, Michael Townley y Guillermo Novo, participaron al asesinato del ex canciller chileno Letelier, ejecutado el 21 de septiembre de 1976 en el barrio diplom?tico de Washington, con su colaboradora Ronni Moffit.

El 18 de agosto de 1993, Townley cont?, en una entrevista con el periodista Marcelo Araya de la televisi?n chilena, como asesin? varias personas designadas por la polic?a secreta del r?gimen militar. Como colaborador de los servicios de inteligencia de Pinochet, el norteamericano experiment? el gas sar?n y otras sustancias qu?micas que se inoculaban a presos de la dictadura.

Novo Sampol es este mismo individuo que fue condenado por terrorismo con Luis Posada Carriles en Panam? en el 2000 y que fue liberado por un indulto traficado por la mafia cubanoamericana y la embajada de EEUU.

EU strikes 2 major deals, stumbles on unemployment

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The past week has seen a rare flurry of activity in the European Union. Two major deals ? a ?960 billion ($1.3 trillion) budget for the 27-country bloc and a system for rescuing banks without making taxpayers foot the bill ? have been brokered. But the leaders from the 27 nations achieved little progress on fighting youth unemployment and speeding up plans for a so-called banking union.

Here is a look at what progress has been made this week to overcome the bloc's economic crisis and what still needs to be done:

PROGRESS: A ?960 BILLION BUDGET TO FUND EU PROJECTS.

The blueprint for the 2014-2020 budget includes the bloc's first-ever spending cuts, as many of its countries are in recession and struggling to reduce their national debt.

Separate from national finances, the EU budget funds everything from joint infrastructure projects and farming subsidies to development aid, research and employment measures.

The seven-year plan was brokered early Thursday after months of infighting between the European Parliament and governments. An EU summit of leaders in Brussels then endorsed the compromise, sending it to Parliament for a formal vote next Wednesday.

DEADLOCK: NO NEW INITIATIVES TO TACKLE RECORD UNEMPLOYMENT

Unemployment is at an all-time high of 11 percent for the EU, which forms the world's largest economy, and stands at 12.2 percent for the group of 17 EU countries that use the euro.

The plight is worse for the young, with almost one in four people aged under 25 without a job. In crisis-hit Greece and Spain, that rate is more than 50 percent.

EU leaders agreed to speed up spending up to 6 billion euros ? about 0.05 percent of the bloc's annual output of 13 trillion euros ? to fight youth unemployment starting next year. However, they had announced that step since last year, and half of the money is only repackaged from other budget positions.

Analysts have warned that the step will make little to no difference, and European Parliament President Martin Schulz called it a "drop in the ocean."

Leaders also called on the bloc's European Investment Bank to kick-start investment and job creation by boosting lending to small and medium-sized firms by up to 150 billion euros through until 2015. The increase in lending is made possible by a capital increase decided last year.

PROGRESS: NEW EU RULES MAKE SURE TAXPAYERS WON'T FOOT THE BILL FOR BANK FAILURES

In the small hours of Thursday morning, European finance ministers reached a compromise on rules enshrining that bank rescues will be primarily funded by the banks' shareholders and creditors, with taxpayer money only a last resort. The new rules create certainty for investors and strengthen Europe's banking system.

The decision draws on the lesson of the 2008-2009 financial crisis when several European governments had to pump dozens of billions of taxpayers' money into their banks to stop the financial system from collapsing.

If a bank fails, losses will be forced on its shareholders, creditors and holders of uninsured deposits worth more than 100,000 euros to cover 8 percent of a bank's total liabilities. Then the government can chip in, as much as another 5 percent of liabilities ? but no more.

DEADLOCK: LONG WAY STILL TO GO ON THE BANKING UNION

Analysts say restoring confidence in Europe's highly fragmented banking sector is one of the key policies to turn the tide on the 17-nation eurozone's debt crisis.

The plan was first endorsed by EU leaders a year ago when markets were worried that Spain ? like Greece, Ireland and Portugal before ? might be forced to seek a full-blown bailout to stay afloat after pumping billions into its ailing banks.

The plan consists of three main pillars: Centralized oversight of big banks anchored at the European Central Bank, a central authority able to prop up or wind down ailing banks, and a jointly guaranteed deposit insurance.

The ECB's oversight is due to be operational late next year, but progress on other fronts has been slow since some countries have started back-pedaling on last year's pledges. Investors no longer feared an imminent breakup of the currency zone following an ECB pledge to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro.

Thursday's agreement on rules for bank failures was a step toward establishing a joint bank resolution authority, but Germany and others seek to delay further progress on that issue and on a joint deposit insurance scheme. The EU summit showed complacency on the matter, making no progress, while pledging to discuss further steps in the fall.

In key Mexican state, opposition leads in poll for July vote

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's main opposition conservatives are on track to retain the key electoral bastion of Baja California next month, according to a poll released on Friday, in a vote that could strengthen a fragile cross-party alliance built by President Enrique Pena Nieto to re-energize the economy.

Falling short of a majority in Congress when he won office last year, Pena Nieto forged a loose pact with the two major opposition parties to work together on economic reforms.

Sparring between the National Action Party (PAN), the opposition leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has threatened to derail his plans to improve the tax take and overhaul state oil giant Pemex. The conservative PAN is seen as his most natural ally, especially on high stakes energy reform.

Since its 2000-2012 rule of Mexico ended in December, the PAN has been rocked by infighting, and on July 7 voters will elect a new governor in Baja California, which was the first state to bring PAN to power 24 years ago. To lose it would be a heavy blow for the party.

The PAN has held the state continuously since 1989, increasing the risk that voters could opt for a change.

However, the voter survey by polling firm Demotecnia showed some 53 percent of the electorate favored the candidate representing the unusual PAN/PRD coalition running in the state, while 45 percent backed the PRI's hopeful.

Sharing a border with the United States, Baja California is one of 14 states that will hold local elections next weekend. It is the only governorship up for grabs, and has become a symbol for the PAN since its capture from the PRI.

The centrist PRI dominated Mexico in the 20th Century, holding the presidency from 1929-2000, during which it acquired a reputation for corruption, vote-rigging and authoritarianism.

Both the PAN and the PRD have pounced upon any hint of electoral fraud by the PRI, and Pena Nieto's reliance on the so-called Pact for Mexico he created with the opposition means his party has to tread carefully in the elections.

A change of power in Baja California would increase pressure on national PAN chairman Gustavo Madero, who has faced persistent grumbling from internal party critics that the Pact for Mexico has undermined support for the conservatives.

The pact has produced a major education reform as well as a landmark law aimed at curbing the power of Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim and broadcaster Televisa, though many of the details of those bills must still be thrashed out in Congress.

Madero has responded to critics by threatening to quit the pact if the PRI does not play fair, and has repeatedly accused the governing party of abusing its power to gain an advantage in the first major round of elections since last July's presidential vote.

If the PAN cries foul following the elections, it is likely to complicate negotiations over the national energy and tax reforms, both of which are due to be presented the Mexican Congress in the next 10 weeks.

The survey, conducted between June 25 and 26, consulted 1,000 people and has a margin of error of 3.2 percent.

Read Your Exported Google Reader Items With This Webapp

With Google Reader closing in just a few days, it may be time to export your data. Services like Feedly are already building migration tools, but if you just want to look at the data, this tiny webapp has you covered.

Githubu user BriceMcIver built a simple tool that allows you to view the contents of your Google Reader data. If you want to use this, first you'll have to download your data from Google here. Once you have the files, extract the zip and point the file chooser in this webapp to any of the files ending in .json. It's designed to work with your list of Starred items (which many of us use as a makeshift to-do list or read-it-later bucket), but I tried it on shared articles, and articles from followers and it worked there too. It didn't work 100% of the time, but it's worth a shot if you just want to see your data without going through a whole big import process.

Facebook says roughly 70 percent of its users in the United States now have friends who identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, which might help explain why the social network saw well over 3 million mentions of today's Supreme Court decisions in favor of marriage equality.

Within 24 hours of the United States Supreme Court's two landmark decisions on same-sex marriage, Facebook saw an unprecedented spike in user activity around the issue, the social network said Thursday.

A Facebook spokesperson told NBC News that more than 4 million mentions of its top 10 keywords related to the court's decisions on California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act ? terms like "doma," "gay," "unconstitutional," "prop 8," "marriage" and, of course, "equal."

In the United States alone, this also led to more than 15 million interactions (likes, comments on one another's status updates, and posts) related to the Supreme Court cases. Worldwide, Facebook says that more than 25 million users changed their profile pictures on Wednesday in response to the decisions ? a million more than on Mother's Day.

This avalanche of status updates and comments about the decision might be explained in part by another piece of data Facebook shared: roughly 70 percent of all Facebook users in America have at least one friend who has identified himself or herself on the social network as gay, lesbian or bisexual.

Earlier this year, much of Facebook went pink-and-equal in support of marriage equality.

"Oh man. Doma-status liking spree," one of my Facebook friends wrote his morning shortly after the first of the two Supreme Court rulings was announced.

Another, who is lesbian, invoked a song from "West Side Story" when she posted this on Facebook about the news: "I FEEL PRETTY AND WITTY AND GAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
