Engage Your Most Uninspired Employees - Business Consulting Firm

Every team has them ? heck, every social circle has them ? the naysayers, the downers, the pessimists ? well, you know who I?m talking about, the people we don?t particularly enjoy. Now, some managers choose to leave these gloom-and-doom employees alone. But, I argue that taking another approach might work to your better advantage.

If your employees aren?t happy, inspired, or driven to come to work each day ? you have the opportunity to ignore their demeanor or identify their reasons. The reason that taking the latter approach is the better alternative for a manager is because although ignoring the employee is the easy route, it won?t get you or that employee any further in your endeavors toward success (and it won?t do the rest of your team any good either!).

Here are 3 tips to consider when contemplating how to involve your most uninspired employees.

1. Informally pursue one-on-one casual meetings with the employee.
The best way to break someone?s bad attitude is to build a relationship with him/her. You can?t expect to know every emotion (nor should you want to, for professional reasons) your employees have, but you can challenge yourself to care about the general well-being of your employees. If they are continually distressed, dissatisfied and distracted at work ? a sincere relationship with their manager might be the right medicine to engage their attention. Furthermore, once each of your reports has a relationship with you, each will have more skin in the game. And once people are personally invested in their team?s project or process, that?s when their engagement drives their excitement, which creates a positive, thriving work environment.

2. Intentionally plan team activities that revolve around team goals.
If you have a few employees who aren?t connected to the greater part of your team?s clan ? you can bet money that they probably aren?t collaborating with the majority of your team either. The more connected team members feel, the more collaborative they are. This doesn?t mean that every competitive streak has to be cancelled out ? no, no, no?not at all! In fact, just the opposite. Sometimes, a little healthy competitive match amongst team members is exactly what each individual needs to demonstrate his/her strengths in the right setting. Through this sort of event, you might just see how intertwined one?s personal confidence and one?s professional commitment are. The more opportunities you give your employees to feel good about themselves, the greater their commitment to your team will be.

3. Invest in establishing good communication skills.
I?m telling you now, if there?s one thing that everybody can benefit from ? it?s getting better at communication. So, stock up on some top-selling books that solidify your communication skills, collaborate with a few communication consultants and mirror your favorite mentors. The worst employees that are the least engaged feel isolated ? and the simplest way to engage them in the short term is to?talk to them! Sounds like common sense, right? Right. But, the problem is that most employees and managers avoid the cynics because they?re unpleasant. This strategy only perpetuates the cycle ? they simply get more alone, which gives them ample more reason to withdraw their attention to and association with the rest of the team. Stop the problem where it starts ? don?t hope it just suddenly goes away?because if that employee quits, your team (and you) have learned nothing.

As the old saying goes, ?No man is an island.? Now, you tell me: What?s your secret to involving the excluded employees?

Avoid E-commerce Website Design Mistakes

?

?

Every businessman dreams of earning huge profit, meeting up clients requirements throughout the world and serving them 24/7. Achieving this dream becomes difficult in the real world, but if you get your business online and appoint a web development company to create an E-commerce Website, you can enjoy many opportunities for expansion. However, you need to look into all those aspects of the e-commerce design that would fulfill the users? demands. If you think, your site is not drawing much traffic or the users are having trouble with the site, the go for a website redesign program. In this article, I would share some of the most common e-commerce web design mistakes that troubles customers while purchasing online products.

Lack of info

The touch and feel experience that a buyer gets while shopping in the real world is not available in the virtual space.

For this very reason you need to win the trust of the buyers through your E-commerce Website. The lack of interaction is a negative side of these sites, so to overcome this you need to specify every detail. But if you fail to provide information about the product, or do not label them with proper price tags, pictures and other such elements, you are bound to fail in your venture.

You would definitely not like the customers to choose your competitors over you. So, what should you do?? Well, ask the experts of web development to put in all information like sizes, materials, weight, dimensions along with the pictures as well as prices of the goods.

If you are selling garments, tell them the available colors and other such instructions that might attract the buyers. An elaborate description of the products can leave a greater impact on the consumers.

Hiding information

If your E-commerce Website does not offer clear information about the entire dealings, then you are taking a huge risk on the ground of earning trust. If you hide the shipping cost or extra home delivery charges, in spite of saying hassle free transaction then you are restricting information.

Your privacy policy as well as disclaimers must mention all the norms and rules about the payment procedures. If you think that you have made this mistake, website redesign is the immediate requirement of the hour. Add your contact number, email address, phone number and all other information without hiding any details.

Search box trouble

Creating a search box icon is a sign of a positive site especially for a commercial site. If your customers are already aware of the products they are searching for, then they can choose the categories and easily get a hold on it. But at times, the search brings in unnecessary results, further confusing the buyers.

If you want to avoid such problem, use a good built-in search engine and add more plug-ins to enlarge its working. Make the search more advanced by including price range, company name, and so on.

These are the few mistakes which E-commerce Website design usually faces. If you want to avoid e-commerce site problems, you can trust Asha Infotech. We are the leading web development and website redesign company. For more information about our services, log on to www.ashainfotech.com.?

Hot Water Dispenser More Details about Hot Water Dispenser here.

Modern living has become highly sophisticated and a lot of pressing concerns can cause elevated stress and physical breakdown. Good thing water dispensers came into the consumer world to help alleviate the high demands on time and energy. A wide array of under sink water chiller and hot water dispenser brands is available and each comes with a price tag that suits every budget. Exciting designs and features will surely dazzle even the most meticulous customer. The following sections discuss two types of water dispensing machines that are great value for money. The first one is able to provide sparklingly chilled water as really delightful refreshment. The second one produces boiling hot water needed to make coffee, tea and other hot drinks. Under Sink Water Chillers These water dispensing machines eliminate the cost and hassle of spending precious time going to the supermarket whenever bottled water has run out. They are equipped with a technologically advanced in line filtration system that can adequately provide a consistent source of chilled and filtered water. The water tastes absolutely great and it does not have the odors oftentimes associated with a mains water supply. The under sink or under counter water chillers are cost effective as well as environmentally friendly. They are directly connected to the mains water supply and the water passes through the in line filtration system. Organic chemicals and undesirable tastes and odors are effectively removed. The filtration process then yields crystal clear and fresh tasting water that is dispensed via the available tap of the machine. There are other essential features that every consumer must watch out for. It is best that the dispensers are built of stainless steel for durability while the coating is ideally of scratch and impact resistant plastic. The refrigeration system must be efficient and silent if possible. With a static condenser, the operation will be incredibly great, providing considerable energy savings. The sealed ice bank of the cooling system must be ensured at all times. Doing so will retain the hygienic levels of the dispensed water. There will then be a continual supply of ice cold water that is free from bacteria obtained from external sources. Also, the need for regular sanitization is reduced. The maintenance of the units is very easy and economical for the filter change and sanitization are done once every 6 months. The product supplier has replacement filters and sanitization kits readily available to prevent any hitch in the use of the machine. The most important thing to consider is that the dispensers bear the CE mark to ascertain that they have passed the European standards for product safety and usability. Hot Water Dispensers These appliances dispense water at near boiling point or at about 94 degrees Centigrade. They are commonly known as boiling water taps. They are available in two models such as hot only, and hot and cold water types. They are kettle like product items that boil and dispense single mugfuls of water. They normally have variable settings in the quantity of water being dispensed. A few seconds is all it takes to dispense water via the hot water dispensers. This means potential energy saving benefits can be acquired because only the necessary amount of water is boiled. The other types of hot water dispensing machines include boil on demand heaters, tank dispensers and thermo pot water dispensers. The boil on demand types of heaters is small, portable and cheap. It does not need installation and is an energy saver. The hot water tank type of dispensers needs to be plumbed directly to the water supply. The water is then heated and dispensed via the faucet. It has a built in filter and thermostat. The thermo pot type of hot water dispensers combines the features of an electric kettle and a hot water flask. It is potable and requires no installation. Water dispensers have innovative designs and awesome features to choose from. Remarkably, they possess both beauty and functionally that make modern life less stressful. There is a choice between countertop and under sink water chiller models, depending on individual preferences. Also, various hot water dispenser brands are also being offered and they serve as great alternatives for the traditional way of boiling water using a kettle.

Beant Bajwa writes articles for PHS Waterlogic, a leading supplier of Water Dispensers in Europe. PHS Waterlogic has an exciting array of under sink water chiller items available. Hot Water Dispenser models are also being offered by PHS Waterlogic as part of its water dispenser line.

Cadence McShane to build Apple?s Austin expansion

Nick Simonite

Plans to move ahead with the construction of Apple Inc.?s $300 million expansion in Austin are on the fast track, according to a Cadence McShane Construction executive.

Plans to move ahead with the construction of Apple Inc.?s $300 million expansion in Austin are on the fast track, according to a Cadence McShane Construction executive.

Srinath Pai Kasturi, vice president and general manager of Cadence McShane?s Austin office, confirmed that the Dallas-based firm was awarded the build-to-suit office complex that will be owned and occupied by Apple (NYSE: AAPL) in Northwest Austin. Cadence McShane is an affiliate of the McShane Cos. based in the Chicago area.

Construction could begin as soon as September or October, Kasturi said, ?but there are a lot of I?s to dot and T?s to cross before they say go.?

Last week the Austin Business Journal revealed that a related company, McShane Development Co. LLC, sold an estimated 40 acres of undeveloped land to Apple in late June. The parcels are located near Parmer Lane and Delcour Drive. Neither McShane Development nor Apple officials would comment about the transaction.

But Monday, Kasturi acknowledged that bids from subcontractors will be solicited in August for construction of the Apple expansion. He said the project is in design and the architect is an Austin company, though he declined to disclose which local firm secured the coveted project.

Small and minority businesses that want to get in on the action should plan to attend a networking session July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event, sponsored by the city?s Small and Minority Business Resources department, will be held at Austin Water Utility Waller Creek Center, 625 E. 10th St., Room 104.

?The project includes the new construction of two 140,816-square-foot, four-story tiltwall office buildings with extensive curtain wall systems and pre-finished composite metal panel exterior along with finish masonry elements,? a flyer for the event states. ?Site work features concrete paving for surface parking, a detention pond with retaining walls and landscaping and hardscaping.?

HTC Confirms Jelly Bean Updates For Most One Series Smartphones

IMG_0053No one really expected HTC to let their newest smartphones languish without Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but it's always nice to hear that sentiment confirmed straight from the source. Representatives from the Taiwanese company noted earlier this morning that the company's flagship One X, One XL, and One S handsets would indeed get a taste of Jelly Bean at some point down the line. Engadget was also able to confirm that some of the North American carrier variants of those devices would also get the update, so owners of the the AT&T or Rogers One X and the T-Mobile One S will eventually get the chance to join in the fun. Sadly, there's no word yet on if modified models like Sprint's EVO 4G LTE will get the delicious little update, but it's almost certainly just a matter of time.

Genealogy's Star: Who can register for FamilySearch Family Tree? A ...

?Both of the questions in the title to this post have been answered many times in this blog, but there still seems to be a controversy arising as a result of some technical difficulties with the process. To start, I will refer you again to the introduction of Family Tree by Ron Tanner at RootsTech 2012. Here is a link to the video http://bcove.me/dc9kdj6o. It is about an hour long, but worth the time to watch. At RootsTech 2012, Ron invited all of the participants, which I estimate at over 2000, to send him an email to receive an invitation to gain access to Family Tree. The return email from Ron Tanner linked recipients to this PDF file Gaining Access to FamilySearch Family Tree. The document is at the bottom of the page.

You will note two qualifications for using Family Tree from the document:

To use the FamilySearch Family Tree, your FamilySearch Account or LDS FamilySearch Account must be authorized. Even if you already use new.familysearch.org, your account must be authorized to use the FamilySearch Family Tree.
and
The FamilySearch Family Tree is currently being tested and is not yet available to everyone who currently uses new.familysearch.org. If you do not see the FamilySearch Family Tree link, it means either that you are not authorized to use the FamilySearch Family Tree or that you have not signed in.
There is nothing in this document that even alludes to a need to have access to New.FamilySearch.org as a prerequisite to using or viewing Family Tree. Subsequently, invitations to register have been sent out Family History Consultants and the unqualified document, cited above, is available to anyone registered or unresgistered, signed on or not signed on to FamilySearch.org.

I have heard several statements, both official and unofficial, sent out by FamilySearch that Family Tree will entirely replace New.FamilySearch.org by the "end of the year" 2012. If this is true, then there are many good reasons for getting as many people transitioned to Family Tree before that time as possible.

Using that invitation, I have added a number of people to Family Tree. To this point in time, I have seen nothing in print or otherwise indicating that FamilySearch does not want people to use Family Tree. EXCEPT comments from users with problems gaining access to the program. Some potential users have evidently been told by FamilySearch support personnel that "You can't get onto Family Tree unless you have been authorized for New.FamilySearch.org." This is either totally untrue, given my personal experience and that of hundreds of other users, or it is something that has been recently implemented. Why would FamilySearch do this? It makes no sense. If as Ron Tanner announced, Family Tree is open to anyone who registers, either for a FamilySearch Account or LDS Account, then why, all of a sudden tie the registration into access to New.FamilySearch.org?

In addition, I doubt that that is possible to do, after the fact, from a programming standpoint. If you have a FamilySearch account and are already on Family Tree, AND never have used New.FamilySearch.org, did you suddenly lose access?

Why would FamilySearch support staff say such a thing? Lack of training and lack of use and understanding of both programs. Simple. By the way, I have reviewed every single support note in the Help Center for FamilySearch dealing with Family Tree and find nothing even vaguely related to the issue of access.

What is wrong with Family Tree? Why are some potential users experiencing ongoing access problems? I have yet to find anyone personally that has the problem. If you are having the problem. Contact me personally in Facebook and give me an email address. I will then contact you and make arrangements to get on the phone with you and see if I can get to the bottom of the problem with access to the program.

If on the other hand, there is a real issue and you must have previously been on New.FamilySearch.org in order to gain access to Family Tree. Why not put that in the official documentation? But that would essentially limit access to Family Tree to members of the Church.

Obama to Small Businesses: ?Somebody Else Made That Happen ...

Debbi Somers

During a recent campaign stop, President Obama criticized small business owners saying, ?If you?ve got a business, you didn?t build that. Somebody else made that happen ? The point is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.?

Are small business owners given too much credit for what they actually do? Las Vegas small business owner Debbi Somers, who voted for Barack Obama in 2008, joined Fox and Friends to discuss why she won?t be supporting the president this time around.

For the latest from Fox News Insider, follow us on Twitter!

While Somers knows that small business owners need the government?s support in order to achieve their dreams, she pointed out that Americans need a vibrant economy in order to be successful.

We work 80 hours and we live it, we breathe it, we eat it, we sleep it, and what we try to do the most, the best job, because we feel that we are the best at what we do.?

In the 2012 election, Somers has put her support behind Mitt Romney instead of her 2008 presidential choice, Barack Obama. She said, ?I believed in the promise that the economy was going to change and we needed help. Being in business for 23 years, I survived 9/11, and so I knew exactly what I was going to do ? We believed that change was going to happen, it didn?t and so what we have to do is take it in our own hands again.?

Since Mitt Romney was a business owner, she said, ?He knows what it?s like to have a limited checking account; he knows what it?s like to, you know, live within your means and try to make the business. At the same time, you have to make the business grow and your employees happy.?

Printable, electrically conductive gel with unprecedented electrical performance synthesized

ScienceDaily (July 4, 2012) ? Stanford researchers have invented an electrically conductive gel that is quick and easy to make, can be patterned onto surfaces with an inkjet printer and demonstrates unprecedented electrical performance.

The material, created by Stanford chemical engineering Associate Professor Zhenan Bao, materials science and engineering Associate Professor Yi Cui and members of their labs, is a kind of conducting hydrogel -- a jelly that feels and behaves like biological tissues, but conducts electricity like a metal or semiconductor.

That combination of characteristics holds enormous promise for biological sensors and futuristic energy storage devices, but has proven difficult to manufacture until now.

The research recently appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Printing Jell-O

Bao and Cui made the gel by binding long chains of the organic compound aniline together with phytic acid, found naturally in plant tissues. The acid is able to grab up to six polymer chains at once, making for an extensively cross-linked network.

"There are already commercially available conducting polymers," said Bao, "but they all form a uniform film without any nanostructures."

In contrast, the new gel's cross-linking makes for a complex, sponge-like structure. The hydrogel is marked with innumerable tiny pores that expand the gel's surface area, increasing the amount of charge it can hold, its ability to sense chemicals, and the rapidity of its electrical response.

Still, the gel can be easily manipulated. Because the material doesn't solidify until the last step of its synthesis, it can be printed or sprayed as a liquid and turned into a gel after it's already in place -- meaning that manufacturers should be able to construct intricately patterned electrodes at low cost.

"You can't print Jell-O," said Cui. "But with this technique, we can print it and make it Jell-O later."

Soft electrodes

The material's unusual structure also gives the gel what Cui referred to as "remarkable electronic properties."

Most hydrogels are tied together by a large number of insulating molecules, reducing the material's overall ability to pass electrical current. But phytic acid is a "small-molecule dopant" -- meaning that when it links polymer chains, it also lends them charge. This effect makes the hydrogel highly conductive.

The gel's conductance is "among the best you can get through this kind of process," said Cui. Its capacity to hold charge is very high, and its response to applied charge is unusually fast.

The substance's similarity to biological tissues, its large surface area and its electrical capabilities make it well suited for allowing biological systems to communicate with technological hardware.

The researchers envision it being used in everything from medical probes and laboratory biological sensors to biofuel cells and high-energy density capacitors.

"And all it's made of are commercially available ingredients thrown into a water solution," said Bao.

The paper's first authors are Guihua Yu, a postdoctoral fellow in chemical engineering at Stanford, and Lijia Pan, a visiting scholar in chemical engineering from Nanjing University, China.

Stanford's Precourt Institute for Energy funded the research.

True nature of staff motivation more complex than surveys reveal

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? High levels of staff engagement could actually be damaging for organisations if overly simplistic staff surveys mask the type of engagement at play within an organisation, according to new research from Kingston University's Business School and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The study found a key difference between types of employees. Those who are involved only with the task at hand (known as transactionally engaged) tend to respond positively to staff surveys, but are often likely to leave quickly for a better offer. However, those who are very positive and feel strongly about the organisation's mission and values (dubbed emotionally engaged) are more likely to perform at a higher level and remain committed through good times and bad.

"The research has identified the clear difference between the people who are primarily working just to make money and have no specific feelings and ties to their employer, compared with those staff who have a closer emotional attachment to their employers," Stephen Gourlay, Deputy Director of Kingston Business School's Centre for Research in Employment, Skills and Society (CRESS) said. "The former group are likely to perform their job reasonably well, but the latter will often go out of their way to carry out additional tasks."

The researchers identified so-called transactional engagement as being shaped simply by employees' concern to earn a living and to meet the most minimal expectations of their employers. Emotional engagement, meanwhile, is influenced by different aspects of work that go beyond the job role itself, including relations with colleagues, line managers, the organisation and clients or customers. It is driven by a desire on the part of employees to do more for the organisation than is normally expected and in return to receive a more fulfilling psychological contract, i.e. to feel more valued.

High numbers of staff displaying transactional engagement were found to be potentially damaging for both individuals and the organisations they work for. This kind of employee (i.e. those just working for the money) reported higher levels of stress and difficulties in achieving a work-life balance than those employees who were emotionally engaged. They were also found to be more likely to indulge in behaviour which could actually damage the organisation than their emotionally engaged counterparts.

"Our research reveals that this whole area of engagement is much more complex than has been portrayed in the past," Dr Gourlay added. "Now further research is needed to examine this more thoroughly."

(AP) ? Pre-election polls on Mexico's presidential vote had projected that leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador would lose by a double-digit margin.

But with 99 percent of the vote tallied in the preliminary count, Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party trails by just six percentage points behind the election's apparent victor, Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.

The narrower-than-expected margin is fueling suspicion among Lopez Obrador's followers about the fairness of the vote, and he refused Monday night to concede defeat ? just as he did when he lost a razor-thin race in the 2006 presidential race and set off months of political unrest. Although this time, he has not called his followers into the streets to protest.

Lopez Obrador argued from the start of the campaign that pollsters were manipulating pre-election surveys to favor Pena Nieto as a way to boost the idea that the PRI candidate was far out in front.

Pollsters denied that, and said Monday that they suspected some voters changed their minds and switched to Lopez Obrador in the final week before Sunday's election. Mexican electoral law bans the publication of polls just before elections, something the polling firms said prevented them from getting a last-minute snapshot of voter sentiment.

The leftist candidate also complained throughout the campaign that biased media favored Pena Nieto, particularly Mexico's semi-monopolized television industry.

"The media sponsored Pena Nieto, they manipulated, they deceived," Lopez Obrador said at a news conference Monday evening. "This was a really dirty election."

Lopez Obrador said he would not accept the preliminary election results reported by the Federal Elections Institute and would wait until Wednesday, when the official results are to be announced, before deciding what he will do.

"We will not accept a fraudulent result," he said.

Lopez Obrador said he probably would challenge Sunday's vote results, but didn't say if he would try to repeat the nearly two months of street blockades in Mexico City that he led in 2006 to protest his close loss to President Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party that the leftist also attributed to fraud.

Pre-election polls said Pena Nieto was favored by 32 percent to 41 percent of voters, while Lopez Obrador had support ranging from nearly 24 percent to 25 percent. Josefina Vazquez Mota of the National Action Party was third at around 19 percent or 21 percent.

IFE's preliminary vote count, however, has produced a much tighter contest. Pena Nieto leads with 38 percent of the votes, while Lopez Obrador is much closer than predicted with 32 percent and Vazquez Mota has 25 percent.

"To say that more than 200 polls, including some that were done by some polling companies he trusted, were manipulated is absurd," said Roy Campos, president of the polling firm Mitofsky.

Campos said polls estimated correctly in what place each of the candidates would finish. The gap between Lopez Obrador and Pena Nieto narrowed because at least one in nine voters changes his or her mind at the last minute, he said.

"There is definitely an effect toward the end that we are not able to measure because the last survey is done the weekend before the election," Campos said.

Jorge Buendia of the polling firm Buendia and Laredo also said it appeared that some voters who initially supported Pena Nieto changed their minds.

"Sometimes we forget that people often tell you a preference without being completely convinced," Buendia said. "But it's not up to us as pollsters, or democrats, to decide that a convinced vote is superior to a doubtful vote."

Supporters of Lopez Obrador, who narrowly lost the 2006 election by a half percentage point, say the polls were "propaganda" used against him and many are urging him to declare the election a fraud.

"We have a situation where the numbers were very different from what the propaganda of the polls was spreading for three months," Manuel Camacho Solis, a former Mexico City mayor who was among Lopez Obrador's campaign coordinators in 2006 and now leads an informal coalition of leftist parties, told reporters Monday.

"They first prescribed us a difference of 25 points, then of 20, and toward the last days of the campaign, and almost in a generous way, they were talking of 15 percentage points."

Hundreds of young people gathered Monday at a monument along Mexico City's main Reforma Avenue to protest Pena Nieto's victory, which they called the result of electoral fraud.

"The election results are being manipulated by the media," said Vladimir Cervantes, a 23-year-old university student. "We will resist so that they don't make the fraud official."

The students said they knew of at least 500 reports of irregularities that were captured in photos and video, including the buying of votes.

"What we want is for the truth to come up and to stop Pena Nieto from taking the presidency," Cervantes said.

Did all predatory dinosaurs have feathers?

Evidence has mounted in recent years that some dinosaurs gained feathers on their way to evolving into birds. But a new study suggests feathered dinosaurs were more prevalent.

The 150-million-year-old fossil of the predatory dinosaur Sciurumimusalbersdoerferi is the first evidence of feathered theropod dinosaurs that were not closely related to birds.

"All of the feathered predatory dinosaurs known so far represent close relatives of birds," said study team member Oliver Rauhut, of the Bayerische Staatssammlung f?r Pal?ontologie und Geologie. "Sciurumimus is much more basal within the dinosaur family tree and thus indicates that all predatory dinosaurs had feathers."

Theropods were bipedal ? walking on their hind legs. Most were carnivores. Many theropods are known to have had feathers, but none so far down at the base of the theropod's evolutionary tree.

The fossil, of a baby Sciurumimus, was found in Bavaria. Remains of a filamentous plumage were preserved, indicating that the whole body was covered with feathers, the researchers said in a statement. (The slender dinosaur also had a baby face, the researchers noted, with its eyes proportionately much larger than those of adults.)

"Under ultraviolet light, remains of the skin and feathers show up as luminous patches around the skeleton," said study co-author Helmut Tischlinger, from the Jura Museum Eichstatt.

"This is a surprising find from the cradle of feathered dinosaur work, the very formation where the first feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx was collected over 150 years ago," said study team member Mark Norell, chairman of the Division of Palaeontology at the American Museum of Natural History.

The discovery is detailed this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Charting autism's neural circuitry: Deleting single gene results in autism-like behavior and immunosuppressant drug prevents symptoms

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Deleting a single gene in the cerebellum of mice can cause key autistic-like symptoms, researchers have found. They also discovered that rapamycin, a commonly used immunosuppressant drug, prevented these symptoms.

The deleted gene is associated with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare genetic condition. Since nearly 50 percent of all people with TSC develop autism, the researchers believe their findings will help us better understand the condition's development.

"We are trying to find out if there are specific circuits in the brain that lead to autism-spectrum disorders in people with TSC," said Mustafa Sahin, Harvard Medical School associate professor of neurology at Boston Children's Hospital and senior author on the paper. "And knowing that deleting the genes associated with TSC in the cerebellum leads to autistic symptoms is a vital step in figuring out that circuitry."

This is the first time researchers have identified a molecular component for the cerebellum's role in autism. "What is so remarkable is that loss of this gene in a particular cell type in the cerebellum was sufficient to cause the autistic-like behaviors," said Peter Tsai, HMS instructor of neurology and the first author of this particular study.

These findings were published online July 1 in Nature.

TSC is a genetic disease caused by mutations in either one of two genes, TSC1 and TSC2. Patients develop benign tumors in various organs in the body, including the brain, kidneys and heart, and often suffer from seizures, delayed development and behavioral problems.

Researchers have known that there was a link between TSC genes and autism, and have even identified the cerebellum as the key area where autism and related conditions develop.

In both cases, deleting this gene caused the three main signs of autistic-like behaviors:

  • Abnormal social interactions. The mice spent less time with each other and more with inanimate objects, compared to controls.
  • Repetitive behaviors. The mice spent extended amounts of time pursuing one activity or with one particular object far more than normal.
  • Abnormal communication. Ultrasonic vocalizations, the communication technique among rodents, were highly distressed.

The researchers also tested learning. "These mice were able to learn new things normally," said Tsai, "but they had trouble with 'reversal learning,' or re-learning what they had learned when their environment changed."

Tsai and colleagues tested this by training the mice to swim a particular path in which a platform where they could rest was set up on one side of the pool. When the researchers moved the platform to the other side of the pool, the mice had greater difficulty than the control mice re-learning to swim to the other side.

"These changes in behavior indicate that the TSC1 gene in Purkinje cells, and by extension, the cerebellum, are a part of the circuitry for autism disorders," emphasized Sahin.

The researchers also found that the drug rapamycin averted the effects of the deleted gene. Administering the drug to the mice during development prevented the formation of autistic-like behaviors.

Currently, Sahin is the sponsor-principal investigator for an ongoing Phase II clinical trial to test the efficacy of everolimus, a compound in the same family as rapamycin, in improving neurocognition in children with TSC. The trial will be open for enrollment until December 2013.

"Our next step will be to see how the abnormalities in Purkinje cells affect autism-like development. We don't know how generalizable our current findings are, but understanding mechanisms beyond TSC genes might be useful to autism," said Tsai.

This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (R01 NS58956), the John Merck Scholars Fund, Autism Speaks, Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation, Children's Hospital Boston Translational Research Program, the Children's Hospital Boston Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (P30 HD18655).

Sahin serves as a consultant and site primary investigator for Novartis.

ScienceOnline2012 interview with Trevor Owens

Every year I ask some of the attendees of the ScienceOnline conferences to tell me (and my readers) more about themselves, their careers, current projects and their views on the use of the Web in science, science education or science communication. So now we continue with the participants of ScienceOnline2012. See all the interviews in this series here.

Today my guest is Trevor Owens (blog, Twitter).

Welcome to A Blog Around The Clock. Would you, please, tell my readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you coming from (both geographically and philosophically)? What is your background? Any scientific education?

I?m a digital archivist at the Library of Congress, I teach a very open and public digital history graduate seminar at American university and I am finishing my doctoral work in social science research methods in the College of Education and Human development at George Mason University.

I come to science from a historical bent; my BA is in the history of science. More specifically, I started out working on the history of science education. I wrote my thesis on the history of children?s books about Einstein and Curie. More recently I have been doing research on science communication and public understanding of science in places like gaming communities, or in discussions of statues on Yelp.

What aspect of science communication and/or particular use of the Web in science interests you the most?

Coming from a history/library/archives background I?m fascinated in the transformation going on in science communication are changing about the nature and discourse of the scientific enterprise and public understanding of science. When historians look back on late 20th and early 21st century science they will undoubtedly be interested in understanding how the web has facilitated, altered and otherwise shifted scientific inquiry and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. If we want to be able to reflect back on the science of our times I think we need to be thinking about collecting and preserving science and science communication that is happening on the web.

So I would say that I am interested in doing what I can to help document and explore what is changing and what is staying the same around the nature and practices of science and science communication.

Tell us a little more about your career trajectory so far: interesting projects past and present?

I worked on a few projects at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University for about five years. In that time i was primarily focused on Zotero, a free and open source research management tool. Before that I worked on the games+learning+society conference for a few years. I?ve been at the Library of Congress for the last two years. In all of those roles I end up gravitating toward thinking about the role, nature, and place of science in society.

I can give a few examples of how these things all end up coming together in some of my recent publications. Each of these explore different subjects but they are all really about getting at ways we can go about understanding science in our world as documented in a range of digital modes.

Teaching intelligent design or sparking interest in science? What players do with Will Wright?s Spore. This article, forthcomming in Cultural Studies of Science is about figuring out how we should go about assessing the impact of a game like Spore on public understanding of science. My goal here was to think through how we could work from something like the Sporum, the games online forums, as a way to explore the ways that people are thinking about the game. In the end, this offers some initial evidence to suggest that a lot of the games players get past the problematic way the game presents evolution and use the game as a catalyst to get into some really interesting and fun thinking and discussion of science.

Tripadvisor rates Einstein: Using the social web to unpack the public meanings of a cultural heritage site. Near the US Capitol, in front of the National Academy of Sciences sits a gigantic bronze statue of Albert Einstein. The monument was created to celebrate Einstein and the sense of awe and wonder his work represents. This article explores the extent to which perspectives of the monument?s public supporters and critics can be seen in how people interact with it as evidenced in reviews and images of the monument posted online. I looked at how folks appropriate and discuss the monument on sites like ?Fickr, Yelp, Tripadvisor, and Yahoo Travel, to explore how the broader public co-creates the meaning of this particular memorial.

Modding the history of science: Values and habits of mind in modder discussions of Sid Meier?s Civilization This article explores the issues involved in interpreting a game through analysis of the ways modders (gamers who modify the game) have approached the history of science, technology, and knowledge embodied in the game. Interestingly looking at online discussions of the game suggests that Civilization III cultivates an audience of modders who spend their time reimagining how the history of science and technology could work in the game.

What was the best aspect of ScienceOnline2012 for you? Any suggestions for next year?

It?s all about the people. I?ve been to ScienceOnline twice, in 2012 and in 2010 and found both experiences to be very enlightening and invigorating. To begin with, I am a big fan of unconferences, there is a good bit more excitement in the air at them. Beyond that, there are a lot of conferences out there that people have to go to for professional reasons, this remains an event that people go to because they want to go. Everybody is there powered primarily because of how much they care about science and science communication and while it can be physically and mentally exhausting it is really great at recharging your drive for the work.

Thank you! Hope to see you again in January.
