Graffiti battery lets you spray paint power supply

Run out of batteries? Just spray-paint some new ones. Researchers have created five sprayable paints that form a lithium-ion battery when layered together, letting you store energy on walls, tiles or even your favourite mug.

Regular batteries contain a positive and negative electrode, both paired with a metal current collector, and a polymer separator sandwiched in the middle. These five layers are normally manufactured in sheets and rolled up into a cylinder, making it hard to create extremely thin batteries.

Now, Neelam Singh and colleagues at Rice University in Houston have used a combination of existing metallic paints and custom materials to create sprayable versions of each layer, allowing them to make batteries just a fraction of a millimetre thick by airbrushing the layers onto a surface, one at a time.

The team applied their batteries to a variety of ordinary building materials and even a ceramic drinks mug to test their potential. Nine bathroom tile batteries charged by a solar cell were able to power 40 LEDs arranged to spell out "RICE" for six hours. They don't yet match regular batteries ? a paintable battery would have to be about 1.5 square feet to match a standard mobile phone battery ? but that is set to improve. "Their capacity, efficiency and performance could be vastly improved if made on an industrial scale," explains Singh.

Pairing the batteries with recently developed paintable solar cells could potentially give your walls an electrifying DIY makeover, but Singh says the paints are not quite ready for home use, as paints must be applied in a moisture- and oxygen-free environment onto surfaces heated to 120 ?C.

"The focus of our ongoing research is to develop new battery materials which would not be degraded by air or moisture, non-toxic and safe to handle and use at home by non-experts, and environmentally friendly during use and disposal," says Singh. Only then will you be able to pick up a few spray cans and build your own batteries.

"I don't think people will be doing this at home, but maybe secondary manufacturers would be painting on batteries," says John Owen, a chemist who researches batteries at the University of Southampton, UK. For example, there are already companies that will gold-plate your iPhone ? perhaps they could also add an extra battery coating.

Firsts are always memorable, even when they don't deserve to be. Your first kiss may not be the best ever, but you'll know till your dying day where and with whom it happened. Ditto for first concerts. Very few of us saw The Beatles at The Cavern Club for our first show, we were much more likely to catch The Police in a soccer stadium or Tiffany at the mall. Those memories fade a little -- you may not remember who went with you or how much the ticket was --?but the song remains the same. Travel down a musical memory lane with us, and share your own first concert experience.

It was a balmy summer evening at the breathtakingly beautiful Gorge Amphitheater in central Washington State when the British pop-rockers Coldplay took to the stage. In front of a golden sunset that descended upon the twisting Columbia River and its surrounding canyons, we sat on the terraced lawn listening to the soaring melodies of ?Viva La Vida? and the pitch-perfect ballad, ?Yellow.?? Like all good things, it came to an end. This, however, was a harshly abrupt end. Near the finale, a drunken duo couldn?t quite keep from spilling their beers on us; then on the drive home,?my girlfriend?decided to break up with me -- apparently the summer is no time for stifling relationships.?So let me start over: On an ominous evening where the harsh waters of the Columbia River crashed into its surrounding canyons, I waited for the washed-out Chris Martin to deliver yet another contrived ballad created with the sole purpose of consoling sexually frustrated middle-age women who deal with their depression with a?bottle of white wine and a ?Viva La Vida? One of the many benefits of being a California girl is the high school graduation ritual that is Grad Nite. Each year, seniors from schools around the state load up in buses and?head to?Anaheim to be locked into Disneyland for the night to enjoy the rides and several concerts. At daybreak, the tired masses stumble back on the bus for a long, (in my case a 400-mile drive back to the Bay Area) sleep-filled drive home. That night, there were several acts performing, but I attended two. Being a stone-cold R&B fan, my first pick was The Dazz Band. The Cleveland-based funk group were riding high on the charts with their hit single, ?Let It Whip,?and since I was there to have ?big fun,? oh, yeah, I let it whip! To this day, whenever I hear that song, I think of dancing with a couple of hundred of my new best friends in my best big-shouldered ?80s dress (girls had to wear dresses for Grad Nite back in the day). Next on the concert ticket was Berlin, one of the many emerging New Wave-synch pop bands of the early ?80s. Thanks to MTV, which was brand new to the TV dial at the time, I fell in love with New Wave. Berlin, fronted by the very cool Terri Nunn, would go on to score a huge hit with ?You Take My Breath Away? later in the decade, but that night their show-stopper was ?The Metro.?It would be many, many years later until I rode le Metro in Paris, but yes, that song came into my head, as well as a cherished memory of one night in The Happiest Place on Earth.??? --Denise Hazlick

When I was growing up in Rochester, N.Y., I could hear the music when bands played Holleder Stadium, three blocks from my house. I remember Deadheads sitting on our front lawn. And I remember my first show inside the stadium, where I had only ever been to see the Rochester Lancers soccer team play. The Police were on their 1983 ?Synchronicity" tour and the regular set list included all the hits you would expect -? ?Every Breath You Take,? ?King of Pain,? ?Wrapped Around Your Finger? and so on. The tour T-shirt remains iconic to me with its red, blue and yellow slashes of color. As a 14-year-old skateboarder at the time, I think the opening bands were a bigger draw for me. The Fixx and Flock of Seagulls were new wave heavyweights and were in heavy rotation on MTV. I can?t remember if Seagulls? lead singer Mike Score?s amazing hair was visible from my seat at the show. But the Internet coughed up a copy of the ticket, and $15 sure sounds like a deal today.?? ?-Kurt Schlosser

Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care? Does anybody really know if my first concert was in 1984 or 1985? At the St. Paul Civic Center, or the St. Paul Auditorium? Those details have faded, but I know the band was Chicago, the album was ?Chicago 17,? and I?m pretty sure I went with my best high-school friend Kate. I?m also pretty sure her parents dropped us off and picked us up since neither of us were old enough to drive. Admittedly, looking back, Chicago wasn?t the coolest band to claim as your first concert. Born the same year as me, 1967, they?ve been around forever, prominently feature horns, and are a staple of light-rock stations and dental offices. ?In short, they?re no Clash. But they?re also second only to the Beach Boys in Billboard singles and album chart success, so take that, cool kids! If I had known that ?what was your first concert?? would become a common icebreaker once adulthood struck, I might have made a more careful choice. But that was the furthest thing from my mind in the late 1980s, when I was all about a certain pop singer who went by one name. No, not Madonna. Tiffany. The events leading up to the concert and the show itself are fuzzy memories. I do recall my mother reacting to one of Tiffany?s hit songs -- ?I Saw Him Standing There? ? with two words: ?Awful, Courtney.? ?Too young to understand that it was a total bastardization of the Beatles song of the same name, I was entranced by the sheer pop quality of it, and the thought of seeing her perform it live? It was Christmas come early. So it?s ironic that I don?t remember the concert per se, but I do remember one important fact. It was my dad who took me and my friend to the actual show. Robert Hazlett sat patiently by our sides as we screamed and sang, disappeared just long enough to make us feel grown up, and bought what I?m sure was a very overpriced T-shirt to commemorate the event. ?So while I?m a little mortified that the answer to this question will forever be an artist who was a total flash in the pan, I am happy about the rest of the memory ? that it was my dad who made it all happen.??? --Courtney Hazlett

I?was 12 and couldn?t exactly drive myself to the venue. That meant whatever rock concert I was going to go to had to come with mom?s stamp of approval. Fortunately, Air Supply was the very definition of mom-approved rock. And heck, I was pre-adolescent and hormonal and just loved all of their deeply sappy love songs with a passion. To top it all off, I was in an Australo-philia phase and was working on finding ways to work lingo like ?wowser? into my daily vocabulary, so the fact that they were from Down Under made them even more exciting. I went with my friend Valerie and both of our moms to Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Md. and the first thing we did was purchase a $10 T-shirt in the parking lot, a shirt which I described in great detail ?- along with a drawing of the Outback-themed stage set ?- in my diary later on. Yes, the dreary Livingston Taylor may have been the opening act, but otherwise the show had everything I could have hoped for: Lasers, moving platforms, and, of course, those deeply sappy love songs. Air Supply rocked (softly) for a couple of hours, and as I told my diary later, ?I had the time of my life. Oh, yes, I also got a big program for $6.???? --Randee Dawn

I was the ripe old age of 12 when I attended my first concert with my best pals Bridget and Vilde -- and Bridget?s dad. I remember the three of us jumping up and down on our seats (we weren?t very tall for 12 year olds), screaming the lyrics back at the pair of beautiful, blond, identical twin boys on stage and loving every second of it. And after the show, we dropped way too much cash on some cheesy looking concert T-shirts. (In fact, it was this one that I bought:? If only I had kept it, I could sell it today for nearly twice the price I paid!) Sure, Nelson may not have maintained their ?cool band? status (some might even argue they were never cool to begin with, but whatever), but after all these years, I can still remember the majority of the lyrics from their debut album and adore it ?More Than Ever? even though my musical tastes moved on long ago.?? --Anna Chan

I?ll admit that my concert track record hasn?t always been the greatest. My first concert was Richard Marx?s 1989 ?Repeat Offender? tour ?- where I was less impressed with the music than I was in trying to impress the two older guys ? senior basketball players! ? who let me tag along. From there, I made a few more questionable choices ?- Milli Vanilli (turns out they WERE lip-syncing!) and New Kids on the Block (a friend made me go, I swear). I made up for it later by scoring fourth-row tickets to Madonna?s 1990 ?Blond Ambition? tour. You just haven?t seen anything until you?ve had a closeup view of Madonna wearing breast cones and gyrating on a red velvet bed. But the concert-going pinnacle of my teen years was Dec. 31, 1991, when rising stars Pearl Jam and Nirvana opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the San Francisco Cow Palace. Who could have predicted then that grunge would eventually lead me to my current home in Seattle????? --Joy Jernigan

Wow, a famous band like Kansas and a hot, new, up-and-coming band like Loverboy were going to play the first big rock concert in the new LaCrosse Center, and I had a ticket! ?By the time my friend Steve?s parents dropped us off, Loverboy was already playing. Mike Reno was energetically running around the stage while his cohorts rocked the crowd. Then, during an extended version of ?Working for the Weekend,? Mike and guitarist Paul Dean began pitting the left side of the audience against the right side, ?C?mon you guys, you?re louder than them?.? How active is your child really?

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) ? Children younger than eight need to be targeted to make sure they lead more active lives to combat our obesity time-bomb, researchers at Newcastle University say.

Their new study reveals that children are not spending enough time being active and that girls are already becoming more sedentary than boys by the age of eight.

In work published in the open access journal PLoS ONE June 21, more than 500 8 to 10-year-olds wore activity monitors providing Newcastle University and University of Strathclyde researchers with a very accurate picture of how little time children spent being physically active. They were monitored for a range of actions from moving around, climbing stairs to running, playing games and skipping.

Researchers found:

Children spent only 4% of awake time in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity, this is about 20 minutes per day while the recommended amount for health is 60 minutes per day.

At age 8, girls were already less active than boys -- something known to occur at secondary school -- but this study has shown that the difference in physical activity between boys and girls starts much earlier on.

Older fathers tended to have less active children.

Children who took part in sports clubs outside of school were significantly more active than those who did not.

Parents who restricted access to television were actually shown to have children who were less active.

Newcastle University's Dr Mark Pearce led this study funded by the National Prevention Research Initiative. He said: "Given the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health, we know we need to get our kids more active. What we hadn't known until now is how young we need to be catching them, or the reasons that lay behind their lack of activity.

"Already at the age of eight, we are seeing girls being less active than boys. This is something which we know then gets worse as they approach their teenage years.

"One of the important things is that most girls don't see sport as cool. We need to be tackling these issues earlier by encouraging girls to exercise, by providing a wider range of opportunities than are currently on offer and by ensuring they see positive female role models, particularly in the media."

As to why the children of older fathers were found to be less active, Dr Pearce said: "We think there may be a variety of explanations for this such as older fathers reaching more senior posts and having to work longer hours or maybe seeing themselves in a more traditional role so spend less time in active play with their children."

Professor John Reilly from the University of Strathclyde, one of the researchers involved in this study said: "There is an urgent need for interventions, at home and at school, which will help primary school children become more physically active."

In the Gateshead Millennium Study, 508 children wore activity monitors for at least three days and their movement was registered which meant their activity levels were objectively measured. The data were then related to an accompanying questionnaire and data collected previously in this study which has been on-going since birth. Findings included that the average daily percentage of time spent doing moderate or vigorous physical activity was just 4.1%. Girls, on average spent 2.5% less of their day doing activity.

Marion Nestle on The (Big) Business of Food Stamps: ?Here's Where ...

In 2011, a record 46 million people - or 1 in 7 Americans -- participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), better known as Food Stamps.

The increased use of Food Stamps is a huge social and political issue for America, and it's also big business. In 2011, the U.S. government spent $72 billion on Food Stamps.

Among the beneficiaries, food producers such as Cargill, PepsiCo. (PEP), Coca-Cola (KO) and Kraft (KFT), as well as retailers like Wal-Mart. Of course, Wall Street gets a cut too, led by JPMorgan Chase (JPM), which administers the SNAP benefits in 24 states.

In the accompanying video, I discuss the (big) business of Food Stamps with Marion Nestle, professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University and author of several books, most recently Why Calories Count.

Generally speaking, Nestle is a supporter of the program, calling it "the only safety net we have left for the poor."

However, with obesity rates rising among the poor -- and obesity a huge factor in rising health-care costs -- Nestle and other health experts wonder whether there should be restrictions on what kind of foods can be purchased with Food Stamps.

Currently, there are few restrictions on what can be purchased with Food Stamps, other than alcohol and prepared foods.

Here's Where the Profits Come In

"Here's where the profits come in," Nestle says. "A vast percentage of Food Stamps' money goes into the pockets of soda companies and snack food companies...and also the stores that sell these foods."

Wal-Mart "gets a large fraction of Food Stamp dollars," which contributes 25% to 40% of revenue at select stores, according to Nestle. "These companies, therefore, have a vested interest in making sure Food Stamps are allowed for any purchase at all."

Funding for Food Stamps comes from the Farm Bill, which is currently being debated in Congress. "You can bet the food companies like it just the way it is and they are lobbying" to prevent restrictions on how Food Stamp dollars are spent, Nestle says.

Citing a recent report by public health lawyer Michele Simon at EatDrinkPolitics.com, Nestle recently made the following observations on her blog about "some of the politics behind efforts to maintain the status quo":

• Food industry groups such as the American Beverage Association and the Snack Food Association teamed up with anti-hunger groups to oppose health-oriented improvements to SNAP.
• Companies such as Cargill, PepsiCo, and Kroger lobbied Congress on SNAP, while also donating money to America's top anti-hunger organizations (who fear any changes to the Food Stamps program will result in benefit cuts).
• At least 9 states have proposed bills to make health-oriented improvements to SNAP, but none have passed, in part due to opposition from the food industry.
• Coca-Cola, the Corn Refiners of America, and Kraft Foods all lobbied against a Florida bill that aimed to disallow SNAP purchases for soda and junk food.
• Banks and other private contractors are reaping significant windfalls from the economic downturn and increasing SNAP participation.

"The point here is that banks that administer SNAP have a vested interest in keeping SNAP enrollments high and makers of junk foods have a vested interest in making sure that there are no restrictions on use of benefits," she writes.

As you'll see in the accompanying video, one other thing stands out when discussing these issues: There is no public data available on how Food Stamp funds are being spent.

"If there are data on what Food Stamps are spent on, they are proprietary data the companies have and either the government doesn't know, doesn't have access or isn't saying," Nestle observes.

Ex-Goldman board member likely to testify at trial

NEW YORK (AP) ? A former Goldman Sachs board member is planning to testify on his own behalf at his insider trading trial, the judge and lawyers revealed Friday, just days before he was expected to take the stand.

U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff announced Rajat Gupta's plans after the jury had gone home for the day, saying the testimony was discussed earlier in the day during a sidebar conversation.

The judge had insisted that the defense reveal its plans so prosecutors would have time to prepare their questions before testimony likely begins on Tuesday.

Gupta's lawyer, Gary Naftalis, still hedged, saying the former board member at Goldman and Procter & Gamble Co. was "highly likely" to testify.

Gupta is charged with conspiring to reveal board secrets that enabled one-time billionaire and hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam to make lucrative trades for his $7 billion hedge fund. Rajaratnam was convicted of insider trading charges at trial last year and is serving an 11-year prison sentence.

The revelation came after Goldman chief executive Lloyd Blankfein completed three days of testimony. He was the government's final witness.

Blankfein gave both sides just enough material to support closing arguments, expected to occur as early as Wednesday.

Over two days, the government elicited answers from Blankfein to support its argument that the kind of Goldman board information the government says he gave his hedge fund trading friend was secret and should have remained so.

Naftalis poked Blankfein repeatedly Friday with questions aimed at showing that information Gupta discussed with Rajaratnam in a July 2008 telephone call was already widely known. Most of the questions were deflected by objections from prosecutors.

Like any good boxer, Naftalis landed a few, drawing just enough from Blankfein to support his arguments that there was nothing wrong if Gupta was talking about subjects that were already being discussed in analyst reports and news articles.

Prosecutors have claimed that Gupta hurried to feed Rajaratnam news that Goldman was going to receive a $5 billion investment from Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and that Goldman was going to surprise analysts and investors by reporting its first loss.

Iran and the so-called P5+1 powers, comprising the United States, Russia, France, Britain, China and Germany, have held two rounds of talks already, and are scheduled for third meeting in Moscow on June 18-19 as a July 1 deadline looms for the enforcement of an EU embargo on Iranian oil.

"If we don't get a breakthrough in Moscow there is no question we will continue to ratchet up the pressure," said Cohen, who coordinates US sanctions policy against Iran.

"The important point for the Israeli public to understand and for the Iranian leadership to understand is that if we are not able to make progress on the diplomatic track there is additional pressure that can be brought to bear on the pressure track."

Cohen, who arrived in Israel on Sunday for talks on sanctions against Syria and terrorist financing, said Washington was consulting closely with Israel on the issue, Haaretz reported.

"We have today and over the past years had very close cooperation with the Israeli government across a range of our sanctions programmes. They are a very good partner. They are creative. They are supportive and we will continue to consult with the Israelis," he said.

Sandoval?s attorney, Eric Geffon, confirmed to CSN Bay Area that Sandoval did not report to AT&T Ballpark yesterday because he was being questioned by police.

?On Friday, June 1, Pablo Sandoval voluntarily met with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff?s Department related to a consensual, personal relationship of a sexual nature that took place on that day. In collaboration, UCI's Elliot Botvinick and UCLA's Gerry Weinmaster published online in the journal Developmental Cell complementary studies in which they each used optical tweezers to detect and measure the mechanical force produced by cells when bound to Notch, a cellular pathway that ensures the correct cell types form at a precise time and location in the body.

"The Notch network is used repeatedly during the development of almost every cell type and must be tightly controlled, as inappropriate communication causes developmental defects and cancer," said Weinmaster, a professor of biological chemistry and researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Successful design and generation of Notch therapeutics demands a solid understanding of the basic mechanics of the Notch network."

"Optical tweezers act as tiny tractor beams that can hold and manipulate microscopic beads coated with specific molecules," said Botvinick, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering and surgery affiliated with the Beckman Laser Institute and The Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology at UCI. "When cells bind to and pull on the beads, researchers can measure cell-generated forces that are billions of times smaller than the weight of one teaspoon of sugar."

Using this technology, the UCI-UCLA team found that communication via the Notch network involves a sort of tug-of-war between neighboring cells in which Notch molecules are unraveled by force to reveal hidden elements important for cell-to-cell communication.

Together with biochemical and biological cell analyses, their findings provide compelling evidence that pulling on Notch opens a network to deliver instructions for specific cellular responses.

The research sheds new light on the role of cells' neighbors in the development and regulation of tissue and advances efforts to create new therapeutics.

He didn't waste any time against Devilder, but it still took him 1 hour, 44 minutes to win, with match point coming at 9:32 p.m.

"When I saw the schedule last night, I expected a long match between Simon and Wawrinka," Djokovic said. "Not that long, but long."

With the win, Djokovic extended his Grand Slam win streak to 24 matches. The 25-year-old Serb has won the last three Grand Slam titles, and he needs four more victories at Roland Garros to become the third player to hold all four major titles at the same time. His next opponent will be Andreas Seppi of Italy.
